The Art of Restraint
Architectural reimagining meets understated, organic urban living
We were invited to transform Sarah's city apartment into a calm, beautifully ordered home with the understated luxury of a boutique organic hotel. Inspired by Japandi design and a strong connection to nature, her vision was for a minimal yet comfortable interior, rich in natural materials, tactile finishes and carefully considered details.
Planning to make this her home for many years, Sarah wanted a substantial transformation that would stand the test of time. Particularly sensitive to pattern and visual clutter, she was drawn to simplicity, natural materials and a restrained palette. Even subtle patterns within fabric weaves could feel overwhelming, making the intelligent selection of materials especially important.
Our approach combined architectural remodelling with a carefully curated interior scheme, creating a cohesive design language throughout the apartment while making the most of the existing spaces.
Architectural Remodelling & Bespoke Storage:
We reconfigured the internal layout, particularly around the hallway and bathrooms, to improve the flow, proportions and functionality of the apartment. A previously pokey, dark bathroom was transformed into a generous ensuite with natural light, creating a much more luxurious and comfortable space. The bedrooms were carefully reconsidered to maximise their usability, including a flexible home office and dressing space, that could double as a guest bedroom. Bespoke joinery was designed throughout to provide beautifully integrated, practical storage while maintaining a clean, uncluttered aesthetic.
The Art of Material Selection:
With pattern deliberately avoided, texture, tone and the inherent character of natural materials became central to the design. We developed a restrained palette of oak veneer, natural stone and subtly textured finishes, carefully considering how each material would sit alongside the next. Even the weave of upholstery fabrics required meticulous selection to avoid unwanted visual pattern. The challenge was to introduce depth, softness and warmth without compromising the sense of calm, proving that a minimal palette can still feel rich and layered.
Understated Luxury & Curated Furnishings:
Existing elements, including much of the kitchen, were thoughtfully retained and adapted rather than unnecessarily replaced. Sustainability and provenance were important considerations, with a preference for authentic materials and pieces sourced from independent makers and smaller design businesses, each bringing its own story and individuality.
The result is a calm, cohesive home where simplicity feels luxurious rather than austere. Through architectural intervention, intelligent material selection and considered craftsmanship, we created an interior that celebrates the beauty of restraint — timeless, tactile and entirely personal.
“Kate transformed a cold, bland flat into a visually stunning, warm Scandi-modern retreat. Lots of ‘wows’ when friends walk in or see photos.”

The ensuite before/after is especially impressive and feels like a completely different space.
